Ecos de voces lejanas

miércoles, 24 de octubre de 2012

This time I'm back to make a review about a novel that is not easy to find in abook shop, although I imagen it's just a matter of time, because it's nearly hot from the oven. It's the second one of a friend, the first one with a steampunk theme, and I have to say that I'm pretty surprised, because although it's easy to relate with The league of extraordinary gentlemen, I must recognise that I hadn't read such thing like this in a lot of time (perhaps never in my life). Maybe some of you liven up to get it and tell us what do you think about it.

Ecos de voces lejanas (Echoes of distant voices) is the story of Lisbeth Swift, a young lady that lives in the English countryside that tries to live on his own way, something that reminds to me Pride and prejudice and its Elizabeth Bennet. The vicissitudes of Lis' life (I can't tell every single detail because it would be a great spoiler) leads her to work in London for the Secret Service. This keeps us in an ambience in the XIXth century that tries to be as historical as possible, meeting real characters as Nikola Tesla (one that I know that the author loves), alhotugh not leaving appart all those characters that come from books that have influenced him, what is a common hobby for both of us. Books of Jules Verne, of H. G. Wells, of Stevenson, of Conan Doyle... And a lot of references that I'm sure that I overlooked. I'm sure it's a good route through the XIXth century literature in the most pure Alan Moore's style.

About the story, the plot is given from the very beginning, and that's why it's not continuously advancing in the same way that a police novel would do. In spite of that, it's not because it's bad written, but because it's a characters novel. That's why it sets a final goal that they will have to reach, seeing what's good and what's not in the other ones, discovering what's behing them, trusting and distrusting in each other... Well, knowing who their partners are, but also who are they theirselves. About the style of writting I have not much thing to say, because it seems clear to me, and although sometimes it has the sin of the information, it's not something that happens continuously, so it's not hard to read. In spite of that, the change of narrator discombobulates me, because we can find one in first femaleperson, as Lisbeth Swift, another one but male, as Charles Gidmore, and, finally, a third person narrator for some scenes. This is something that I must recognise that I had to get used, but once you do, it's easy to follow the thread of the narrative.

Josué Ramos has written a steampunk theme novel with a plot loaded of characters with their own stories, characters that interact and that will set a before and an after in Lisbeth Swift's life, somebody that I'm sure that we will hear of. Ultimately, Ecos de voces lejanas (Echoes of distant voices) is a reading that, although different to what we're used to, takes the classic readings of the XIXth century, making the joy of those that, like me, dream with the wits of the Industrial Revolution.

EuroSteamCon II

martes, 16 de octubre de 2012

Today we're back with the chronicle for the second day of the EuroSteamCon. It's hot from the oven, just written by our friend Josué. Thanks once again to him. Hope you like it.

Saturday, 29th. EuroSteamCon

The second day of the party in Madrid, inside the international convention yet, and in digital touch with the rest of Europe, started the fraternization banquet with more than twenty people in a restaurant near the Ithilien, where the first news through Twitter and Facebook with Barcelona and A Coruña began to flow.
The food and the later chat lasted until almosth eight, the fixed hour to begin the Dark Circus party, but not before having a moment to go to the Sagra Palace for the essential family photo.

Once in the party, even with a more distended, relaxed and festive ambience than the day before, the acts that were scheduled passed one after one, calmly. Between Janacek, the host, and Alfaya, it could be done a conection with Barcelona to have a constant projection of the developement of the parties through Ustream. In spite of that, the first photos of the EuroSteamCon in Galicia could be seen, the one that we're specially proud that was a succes, from Santa Margarita Park in A Coruña.

And it was projected for all of the the final assembly of the video that Muriel Dal Bo and a team of steampunks of Madrid shot as a display of the EuroSteamCon Madrid to send all over Europa a few weeks before. It must me mentioned here a huge detail that was received in Madrid from Lisa Griffiths, the number one in the neo-victorian world, and through Jack Winchester. A video where Lisa made her best wishes for the European Convention and a special greeting both for the steampunks and for the people of The Golden Gear.

But not everything was steampunk, because it was also done a a little but significative gap for the other retrofuturisms. For example, with the presence in the party of rockers from Viva Las Vegas, who took care to present the spectacle ruled by Las Vegas Dolls, Lady Dramakuin and Monika Morty, that selflessly participated in the event.

And, of course, as it's usual in the Ithilien, all along the night a lot of wit games were developed by Janacek, in spite of a raffle of three copies of the novel by Josué Ramos between all the people there.

Taking stock when finishing the party, the final result was excellent. Everyone enjoyed the party, Friday and Saturday, and all the objectives that the management had before starting this adventure were reached from afar.
It was showed that Spain is clearly trained to have its own gap in the international steampunk and with some efforts and collaboration great things can be done. And, of course, that the international opening and the conection between movements through Europe can be pretty helpful.

Thus, EuroSteamCon Madrid: Mission Accomplished.

EuroSteamCon I

viernes, 12 de octubre de 2012

Tea in the Clockwork Yard couldn't be present in the celebration of the EuroSteamCon (European Steampunk Convention) that was celebrated last September. However, we've got friends that could. One of them was Josué Ramos, author of two novels and manager of the blog Mundo Steampunk. Thanks to him we bring with us a chronicle of the two days of the convention as it was felt in Madrid. We'll leave you with the first one.

Friday, 28th. Pre-EuroSteamCon.

We can summarize it in just two concepts: literature and clothes. The party began around ten o'clock in the night and it lasted until, more or less, two in the morning, with a calm ambience, no hurry, and specially relaxed and enjoyable both for the guests and for the partakers of the different acts that took place.
The first of the introductions was done by a special guest, Jesús Cañadas, writer of the horror genre. Both for being an interested author in steampunk and retrofuturist movements and for his personality, Jesús proved to be the ideal person to introduce Ecos de voces lejanas (Echoes of distant voices), the second novel of Josué Ramos and the first one totally steampunk. Of this introduction worths noting a quote that a lot of us took when finishing because of being a good summary of everything that Jesús wanted to tell: “Echos de voces lejanas (Echoes of distant voices) is a love letter to steampunk”.

Both him and Josué tried to accomplish their target of introducing the novel and attract the atention to its strong points as a steampunk narrative at the same time that they tried to interact with an audience wanting to participate, answering the questions that were done that had to do with the novel and having an interesting and funny chat about this topic.

It's also remarkable that, between the presentations, there were time gaps where lady Elizabeth Winchester or the jewelers of Decimononic showed a sample of their clothes and jewelery respectively. Introduced by Janacek Jadehierro, owner of the Ithilien, Elizabeth, Alfaya and Zelkova had the oportunity of explain the reason for their works and the objectives that tried to reach with their creations, as, in the same way, we could see some clothes made by Alassie and Lady Aguja and some complements and jewelery by Lua Chea, Lady Aguja and Rakel Archer.

Back to the literature, the second one of the three presentations of the night totally ran out in charge of Víctor Blázquez, guest author as representative of ESMATER, the Horror Writters Association of Madrid. The organization went out of the pure steampunk to talk about horror by and large. The part of Víctor was about explaining the mission that borns with this group of writters and which are their objectives facing the future. Of course, he was given the oportunity of linking this presentation of the association with the one of his first novel, El cuarto jinete (The fourth horsemen), published in the Z line of the publishing house Dolmen.

The literary chats raised by the presentations carried on between drinks all along the night between the three authors, Jesús Cañadas, Víctor Blázquez and Josué Ramos, and with the most of the people.

Finally, the third and the longest one of the three, was ruled by the management and the host of The New Golden Gear, direct organizer forum of EuroSteamCon Madrid. The Golden Gear presented the one that they called in many times as “the book of the forum” (an international compilation of their best creations in all artistic scopes) as their new and renewd image, that leads them to make one more twist to their philosophy in their opening to the international public, creating and keeping contact with steampunks all over the world, as an opening to new horizons, giving a place to another cultural movements, although steampunk and neo-victorian still are their hallmark.

* * * * *

Steampunk Project Eclipse

lunes, 1 de octubre de 2012

Hi everyone.
We are here again to present you the new releases from Groove for September: The Steampunk Project Eclipse, comprising a Pullip, a Taeyang and an Isul.
Groove created other steampunk collection in 2010, it was a limited collection comprising all type of dolls that belongs to the Pullip's line (Pullip, Dal, Taeyang, Byul and Isul). It was a succes so, here are they again with new dolls.

First of all a photo where you can see the old collection (And you can use it to compare with the new dolls):
From left to right: Byul Rhiannon, Pullip Eos, Dal Ra Muw and Taeyang Gyro

And here we go with the new ones:

This is the Pullip Aurora: I think that the dress is wonderful with a lot of little details (For example, the hat or the corset), I'm in love with this outfit but we can find something that reminds us the "old" Pullip Eos: The wings. I don't know why they repeat the same wings in other colour, there are a lot of types of wings...
The make up looks like Pullip Adsiltia's one (But with so many lashes), in my opinion the make up is too much dark and the skin too much pale, but never rains to everyone's taste.
The wig is so cool, I really love the color, I hope it has a good quality too.

This is the Taeyang Pluto: Ok... First of all, the eyebrows! What happens with them? I really don't know what Groove designers think (But I would like to know it) and the make up is... Girly with all the big lashes, and again the pale skin. The wig is ok, but I don't know why he wears pink hair gums in the braids. Although the outfit is LOVE, the coat, the details in the neck and the hat, it's really wonderful and original and includes a lot of pieces.

At last, Isul Helios: The eyebrows have dissapeared I think, but the make up is ok, I thinks that fits with the steampunk style, but... Well, pale skin again. Otherwise the wig is so cool with two colors and the outfit... I don't know what happens with this dolls but all of them have wonderful outfits. It looks like so... Wow, there are a lot of details in the clothes, the hat is very well done with his little glasses and the bag in his back, cool.

That's all, "different" dolls with perfect-wonderful-cute-adorable outfits.
Which do you prefer? The new or the older ones?

* * * * *

De izquierda a derecha: Byul Rhiannon, Pullip Eos, Dal Ra Muw and Taeyang Gyro
